According to Mayan legend, this island was sacred to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, love, and fertility. For centuries, the Maya would bring offerings of clay figurines to the goddess.
Now this island is a small and welcoming fishing village with colorful boats and cheerful homes. Isla Contoy is designated a national park, and I love it for snorkeling and getting the opportunity to encounter countless marine animals, while at the same time seeing all the different species (more than 150) of beautiful migrating birds that make this protected island their part-time home. Allow us to help you plan an excursion to a location with beauty that was deemed worthy of a goddess.
