When you’re ready for a more laid-back day of exploration and relaxation, spend a day at Isla Mujeres. Located just 20 minutes by ferry from Cancún, this small island is a lush tropical paradise. It is said that the island was once the sanctuary for Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of fertility, reason, medicine, happiness and the moon. Since then, it has served as a haven for pirates who legends say used its shores to keep their women safe and treasure buried. It was also a thriving fishing village with an abundance of marine life.
At Isla Mujeres you can spend hours exploring the water swimming, diving and snorkeling. Learn about the history of the island and the heritage of its ancient Mayan civilization. Or take to the land and explore the turtle refuge before enjoying lunch and frozen concoctions at one of the oceanfront restaurants.

Take the ferry over to Isla Mujeres and rent a scooter and drive around the island. Such fun! There are places to stop and have lunch and enjoy the beach and the pool while your there. There is a beach near the ferry dock where it is a favorite place for kite sailing, which is wonderful to watch too.

This is a great island to take a day trip to on Ferry from Cancun.
We took young kids and rented a golf cart for a quick trip around the island. Tortugranja is a must stop for sea turtle hatchery and other sea life exhibits. And, or course, find a nice beach for lunch and dip in the ocean.

WE rented a golf cart and spent the day traveling the island. The trip over and back on the catamaran was great. Too bad the island was not further away and the water trip longer.

Perfect day... hop on the R1 or R2 bus to the ferry landing. Ferry over to Isla Mujeres. Rent a golf cart, stop at Chedraui grocery for beverages, snacks and awesome donuts. Tour the island stopping along the way. Lunch at La Lomita, a small restaurant with the best chicken enchiladas ever and super cold beer. Try the conch too. Then head to the beach and chill in the crystal clear super flat calm water. Remember sunscreen and pesos.

Every time we head over to Cancun Mexico we make a day trip over to Isla Mujeres. You can take the ferry over and get a golf cart lined up on the ride over. Once off the ferry you can walk right over to the rental place, pay and go. We drive around and pop in to several places, grab a beer, cocktail or a bite to eat. We have visisted the turtle farm, had drinks in the Ice Castle, walked around Punta Sur and relaxed on the beach at Playa Norte on the north end of the island. Well worth it!
