Spontaneous wonders always await our regular winter visit to the Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas North during prime whale watching season on Maui. Living in snow country in Washington State, we always look forward to our visit, and exploring the diverse places on Maui that are ever changing. My wife and I are particularly fond of The Westin Kā‘anapali because of this kind of nature nearby. In fact, my wife overcame her fear of the water by snorkeling frequently in front of our villa. Now we get to do it together! On a particular morning, we awoke to the usual warm sun, soft and fragrant breezes, and calm seas in front of our oceanfront villa, anxious to get outside to snorkel. We took our coffees and binoculars to the veranda to watch the joggers and scan the horizon for whale spouts, and look along the near-shore for turtles and seals. To our surprise, a mama whale and her baby were floating in the stillness of the shimmering sea, not more than 200 yards or so offshore and right in front of our villa. There was a small crowd gathered on the beach watching. A paddle boarder from Black Rock was headed in their direction and a couple of snorkelers were in the water at a respectful distance. Time stood still as we watched. Mama had chosen this quiet cove to shelter her little one who was tucked close to her side, a respite from the harder world they would have to face later on. Great respect was being shown to nature's wonder right in front of our eyes. After about an hour, mama and baby decided to slowly head out to deeper waters. The crowd on the beach had grown, and stood in awed silence as mama and baby resumed their journey. Every morning thereafter, we immediately went outside to the veranda to look for mama and her baby to see if they had returned. Sadly, they weren't there; but there were plenty of other whales we could see farther out, and we imagined that mama and baby were part of that group.
