One destination my husband and I never got to go in our travels was the Grand Canyon. So once the children were fully independent adults, it was our first major location. The highlight of our trip was a day long guided excursion to Sedona and the Grand Canyon National Park. The sun was just rising out of the valley when we arrived in this picturesque town, and it set the rock formations ablaze with a multitude of reds and ochres. But that was just the beginning; for as we travelled higher in elevation, we saw the scenery change from a desert landscape with saguaro cacti to grasslands. And even further, the landscape then shaped into mountain vegetation with evergreen forests and snow for skiing.
As we approached the Grand Canyon National Park and walked the last 200 yards, we got the most jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring view we had ever seen. No photo or video could capture the vastness and grandeur of this natural wonder. We could have stood for hours just watching the play of light over the rocky formations. Just looking down into the canyon bottom was like looking down from an airplane or the top of a super skyscraper. The ranger station below looked like it was built for ants. We could not believe that there is still a tribe of Native Americans living in the canyon bottom who receive mail delivery by mule and larger items by small plane. We felt very tiny and humbled by this natural wonder of the world. We could only imagine the shock that early explorers and pioneers must have felt as they travelled west in this region, thinking that the land was easily traversed as it was flat and dry for hundreds of miles—when all of a sudden this chasm appeared out of nowhere and without warning.
We were even treated to the sight of a small herd of elk grazing near the Grand Canyon Park train station.
We would highly recommend a visit to Arizona, especially the Grand Canyon, one of the most beautiful and unspoiled natural wonders of the world.
