Your bike-forward getaway
From Colorado to Florida, these destinations invite a family-friendly biking excursion.
Mountains. Desert. Beach. It’s fun to explore your new surroundings on two wheels. Whether you’re looking to cycle down a ski run in Colorado, hit a white-sand beach in Florida, or glide past towering cacti in the Arizona desert, these three destinations offer the best spots to bike with a view.
Bike in Beaver Creek
Nestled in a valley ringed by craggy Rocky Mountain peaks, Beaver Creek is one of Colorado’s premier winter ski destinations. In the summer, the lifts ferry mountain bikers to the top of the mountain so they can ride the ski trails down on two wheels.
There are single-track trails for all skill levels, including kids and beginners, making this a perfect choice for families. The downhill ride is easy — your kids won’t be complaining about peddling up steep hills. If you don’t have your own bike, you can rent one in Beaver Creek Village, near Sheraton Mountain Vista resort.
Take in the Desert Landscape in Arizona
Scottsdale is known for its golf courses and luxe spa scene, but it’s also the perfect spot for family biking. With Sheraton Desert Oasis as your home base, you can glide past towering saguaro cacti on sandy, single-track trails under a bright blue sky.
To earn your time in the whirlpool spa, head 30 minutes east to McDowell Mountain Regional Park, which offers more than 50 miles of multi-use trails ranging from easy to strenuous. Try the Scenic Trail for an easy family-friendly ride. The popular 4.4-mile loop trail passes plenty of cacti species and desert wildflowers. Note: Bikes can be rented at two shops just outside the park entrance.
Coastal Trails in Jensen Beach, Port St. Lucie
On Florida’s Treasure Coast, the area around Jensen Beach and Port St. Lucie features white-sand beaches backed by a warm, aquamarine sea. It also boasts plenty of scenic cycling options.
The nearly 4-mile paved Green River Parkway Trail offers an easy ride between Port St. Lucie, near Sheraton PGA Vacation Resort, and Jensen Beach, close to Vistana Beach Club.
For a fun day trip, head to Savannas Preserve State Park, which stretches 10 miles between Jensen Beach and Fort Pierce. Home to South Florida’s largest freshwater marsh system, the park boasts paved bike trails that are perfect for families.
Wildlife enthusiasts will want to check out Jonathan Dickinson State Park, which has a range of paved and off-road trails. All offer a chance to glimpse endangered and unique animals, from Sandhill cranes and bald eagles to alligators and Florida scrub-jays.
