Video: Blessing the Land

In Hawaii, land is considered sacred. Any time new homes or businesses are constructed it is customary for a spiritual advisor or cultural practitioner to bless the land, ask for protection and foster good energy.

Honoring the Hawaiian culture is extremely important in the development of The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas. We were privileged to host our own ground blessing led by Makalapua Kanuha, Cultural Advisor at The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas.

On February 17, 2015, Makalapua and her team of cultural experts ensured that the resort’s 16 oceanfront acres were prepared in true Hawaiian tradition. Local Maui officials joined resort leaders for a ceremony that included a dedication by a cultural practitioner.

The significance of the blessing was just the first step in creating a resort that will represent and exemplify the qualities of nanea.
